Bhutan feels different the moment you ride in — the pace slows, the air clears, and the roads carry you through forests, valleys, and quiet mountain towns that never feel rushed. This Royal Enfield expedition isn’t about covering distance; it’s about how the ride feels while you’re in it. Known as the Land of the Thunder Dragon, Bhutan is a country where tradition is still woven into daily life — cliffside monasteries, prayer flags moving in the wind, and views that never feel staged or crowded. Calm, but never boring.
Fly from Delhi to Bagdogra (approx. 2.5 hours), then continue by private vehicle to Phuentsholing (approx. 4 hours). Cross into Bhutan, the Land of the Thunder Dragon, through Phuentsholing — the country’s main trade gateway with India, marked by a long border wall and a single Bhutanese gate. The town itself is modern with little of tourist interest, but offers the clean, calm atmosphere typical of Bhutan. The terrain begins climbing almost immediately past the border. Overnight in Phuentsholing.
After breakfast and completing visa and road permit formalities, ride up into the mountains toward Paro. Stop for photos at Gedu University, and visit Kharbandi Monastery along with smaller villages en route. Time permitting, detour to Chele La Pass (3,988 m) for sweeping views of Mt. Jhomolhari and the surrounding Himalayan landscape. Lunch at the hotel, with the evening free to explore Paro Dzong, the National Museum, and the riverside area. Overnight in Paro.
An early start for a 2–3 hour hike up to Tiger’s Nest Monastery, the iconic image of Bhutan, followed by a roughly 1-hour hike back down. Continue by motorcycle through Paro’s fertile valley, riding alongside terraced rice fields and the Paro and Thimphu Rivers en route to the capital. Check in and explore Thimphu at leisure. Overnight in Thimphu.
Visit Buddha Point (Kuenselphodrang), home to one of the world’s largest Buddha statues at 52 metres, said to contain 100,000 smaller Buddha statues within it. Continue over Dochula Pass toward Punakha, stopping for lunch in Lobesa. Visit Chimi Lhakhang and the impressive Punakha Dzong before continuing via Bajo town to Phobjikha for the night.
After breakfast, ride to Trongsa to visit Trongsa Dzong and Ta Dzong Museum, before continuing on to Bumthang. Dinner and overnight stay in Bumthang.
Visit Jambay Lhakhang, Kurje Lhakhang, and Tamshing Monastery — three of the valley’s most significant temples. Later, take an optional ride to Ura Valley, a 48 km one-way trip through scenic countryside. Overnight in Bumthang.
Ride back through Trongsa town before descending toward Tingtibi. Overnight at a hotel or local farmhouse in Tingtibi.
Ride to Gelephu, the nearest town to the Indian border in Assam. The most direct route includes a stretch of off-road riding not shown on standard maps — part of the adventure. Overnight in Gelephu.
Leave your motorcycle in Bhutan and complete exit formalities before crossing back into Assam, India. Continue along the smooth, paved Assam Highway (NH31) to Guwahati. In the evening, enjoy a relaxing Brahmaputra River cruise. Overnight in Guwahati.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Delhi to connect with your onward international flight. You’ve experienced Bhutan, often called the happiest country in the world — we hope a little of that stays with you. Until your next adventure.
